No more altitude sickness

In May 2012, I had the opportunity to travel to Peru with a group of students and professors from my university. We were to explore the city of Cusco and hike 28 miles to Machu Picchu along the ancient Inca Trail. Ahead of the trip, school administrators warned us about the many ailments we might face, particularly altitude sickness. So, in preparation, I specifically addressed this issue in my prayers. I filled my journal with spiritual ideas that I could turn to while thousands of miles away from home.

I was comforted by this verse from the Bible: “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (II Timothy 1:7). This helped quell a fear that I would feel mentally alone while in Peru. I could be influenced only by God, not by the fears or thoughts of the individuals around me. Furthermore, I affirmed that each person I interacted with on the trip was also protected by God’s all-encompassing goodness. They could not experience fear or illness any more than I could.

As I looked up Bible verses and articles from the Christian Science periodicals, I was struck by the significance of mountains in the Bible. I was reminded that before Jesus preached to and healed others, he frequently retreated to a mountain, where he would prepare his thought and commune with God. For example, he went up into a mountain before sharing the Sermon on the Mount, healing the multitudes, and walking on the water.
