Swollen and painful foot healed
One day a couple of summers ago, my foot began to swell and become painful. I was serving as a Reader at my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and I was concerned that I would not be able to stand to conduct the service the next day, let alone wear shoes.
I called a Christian Science practitioner for help. When I explained what was going on, she reminded me that Spirit, which is another name for God, is my true substance and consciousness, not matter. The practitioner also assured me that I couldn’t be mesmerized into thinking I was conscious of something that doesn’t have any authority in spiritual reality, such as a swollen and painful foot. The truth of my spiritual substance and individuality as God’s child is all that defines me.
Sunday morning I was able to put on shoes and go to church. If needed, I could slip the shoes off during the service and put all my weight on one foot; no one would notice since I was behind the Reader desk. But I was so absorbed in the many healing ideas that were brought out during the service that the pain disappeared, and I forgot all about my foot and my plan to remove my shoes.
