When I was healed of monthly suffering
I was brought up with Christian Science. My mom drove my brother and me to the Christian Science Sunday School regularly, even though we bickered on the way there in the back seat! When I was about nineteen, a healing proved to be a turning point in my practice and understanding of Christian Science.
I was going to bed for the night with menstrual cramps that I’d suffered with each month during my teenage years. This time, I decided to find out for myself if prayer as taught in Christian Science is effective. I lay in bed, and my next thought was, “What do I know best?” It was “the scientific statement of being,” something I’d learned in Sunday School. This statement is from page 468 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and it starts: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind ….” That’s as far as I got. It goes on to affirm that Mind’s manifestation, including me and everyone, is spiritual, reflecting God.
The concept that I was spiritual and not material became real to me. I realized that if “all is infinite Mind,” then this discomfort couldn’t be true since it was no part of God, Mind. And because I am God’s reflection, I could not reflect anything unlike God. Matter and pain had nothing to do with divine Mind or me. In fact, they had no substance at all. That was the end of the recurring cramps. From then on my cycles were normal until they ended, and I did not experience struggles with menopause.
