Shake off the dust!
I often think of this Bible verse from the book of Isaiah: “Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem” (52:2).
What is it to shake ourselves from the dust? It is to actively pray, to think rightly, to wake up to what is true about ourselves and the world. The study of Christian Science has certainly taught me how to shake myself from the dust, to reject false suggestions that we are mortal, material, and helpless—and instead turn to God, who supplies constant healing, true support, and everlasting freedom.
Last year, I had a tumble in the basement and landed on my knee. No one was home, my phone was upstairs in the front office, and I was in quite a bit of pain. I sat there on the floor declaring that children of God can never fall from God’s protection.
