Christian Science and our ‘heritage of freedom’
In the Bible, Christ Jesus is recorded as saying, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is the title of the Christian Science textbook, written by Mary Baker Eddy. I’ve always loved the thought of this book as key to the Scriptures, unlocking the treasures of Truth that set us free.
Understood spiritually, the Bible is the door to dominion, which the key of Christian Science unlocks. The inspired Word leads to freedom from all claims of the material senses, such as disease, accident, fear, addiction, and bodily harm. Mrs. Eddy tells us that this freedom is man’s divine right: “The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses” (Science and Health, p. 228).
This “heritage of freedom” from material sense for each one of us is revealed in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. It is seen in the many healings; spiritual healing is a golden thread that weaves its way throughout the entire Bible.
