Healing as Jesus healed—still possible today
In the Bible we read of wonderful healings accomplished by Christ Jesus. Thinking about such healings, we might wish that Jesus were still here to do such works. The good news is that healing in the way Jesus healed is still possible today.
This was proved to me when I was in graduate school and riding a bicycle to a part-time job. One day when I arrived home, I was experiencing great pain in my back. A few days earlier I had met a man who was a full-time Christian Science healer—a Christian Science practitioner. Hobbling to the phone, I called him for help.
I reminded the practitioner who I was, and I described my problem. He agreed to give me Christian Science treatment, and, as I hung up the phone, the pain and disability vanished completely. I called right back to report my total freedom. While this healing was some years ago, I still vividly remember the joy it gave me. The quick relief I experienced was one of my earliest proofs that healing in the way Jesus healed is possible through the divine Science of the Christ.
Jesus promised that God would send a “Comforter”—“the Spirit of truth”—to continue instructing mankind in Jesus’ way of healing and salvation (see John 14:16, 17). And just a few verses earlier, Jesus promised that his followers would continue to do the works that he did: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do” (John 14:12).
The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, longed to heal as Jesus did, and she found in the Bible the Science behind Jesus’ healing works. In fact, she called the truth she discovered “the Science of the Bible” (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 27). Instructed by this Science, she began to prove the validity of it through healing in the same manner that Jesus healed, and she taught others how to do the same.
Healing in the same way Jesus healed involves an understanding of divine Truth. In the Gospel of John, Jesus told those who believed in him that if they continued in his word and knew the truth he knew, the truth would make them free (see John 8:31, 32). This freeing truth Jesus taught, and which Christian Science has magnified, is that God is good, that God is Spirit and all-powerful. Jesus proved that man is the likeness of Spirit and is spiritual. He also left us ample instructions on how to live; for example: do good to others, forgive those who do wrong to you, be meek and humble.
Referring to Jesus’ ability to see spiritual truth or reality, and thus bring healing to the human experience, Mrs. Eddy wrote: “Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 476–477).
Healing in the same way Jesus healed involves an understanding of divine Truth.
I recently witnessed this power of God to heal when a family member was suffering severely from a fever and associated symptoms. We asked a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, and I was praying too. Suddenly, an article by Mary Baker Eddy came into my thought about how a Christian Science healer should mentally declare the perfect health of their patient, and also declare the ability of the patient to know that they are healthy (see Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 220).
Drawing on what I had been learning about God’s all-powerful goodness, I suddenly saw clearly how true this must be of my family member. Immediately, she said out loud: “The fever is draining away. I feel so much better.” The symptoms immediately vanished, and she slept peacefully the rest of the night. Within a short time, with continued support from the practitioner, a few lingering effects of the problem were also gone.
I can only conclude from experiences I have had that healing as Jesus healed is not only possible today but also that it is still happening. It is happening for those who believe with the disciple Peter that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). It is happening for those who live the humble, forgiving life that Jesus exemplified. It is happening for those who know and understand the truth that Jesus knew—what Mary Baker Eddy called the Science of Christ, and the Science of the Bible. This is the good news of Christian Science.
