Modern-day disciples of Christ
There is no exclusivity attached to the practice of spiritual healing as taught in Christian Science. Given to the world in Mary Baker Eddy’s textbook and companion to the Bible, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, this Science shows that anyone can experience healing just as the early disciples and apostles of Christ Jesus did. But do we today—as did those original disciples—hear the call of the Christ, “Follow me”? Are we listening to this call?
The Bible points out that when Jesus began his ministry, he selectively picked his followers. Interestingly, probably none of them were particularly well educated, though they might have had some religious training in the synagogue schools. A few, however, were already successful in their current line of work: fishing. This may have been all they knew before Jesus invited them to follow him and become “fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). They seemed unlikely candidates for disciples of this master Christian—the unique Teacher and preacher of a revolutionary, entirely spiritual way of thinking, living, and healing.
So, why did Jesus choose these particular disciples? Part of the reason may have been because, up front, Jesus seemed to require just one thing from a disciple in two words: “Follow me.” And these disciples willingly followed! They dropped everything in obedience to this calling from Jesus. Though perhaps not understanding the full magnitude of Jesus’ mission, the disciples left their fishing nets at the shoreline without a second thought. Such trust! Such faith!
