The law that liberates us
My colleague’s words took me by surprise.
Our global Church has a compact and inspired book of rules governing the Church organization, the Manual of The Mother Church; and the two of us were discussing a meeting in this man’s country that would highlight a particular By-Law in the book that could help bring progress to the practice of Christian Science there. He bluntly stated that the meeting would be an uphill struggle because decades of endemic corruption meant his fellow countrymen, including church members, saw law simply as a ploy by which people in power could shake them down with impunity.
His frank admission laid the groundwork for a more successful meeting by steering us to realize we had to offer a fresh perspective on law itself before tackling the subject of the particular Church By-Law we were highlighting.
