Normal hearing restored

I am very grateful for a healing I experienced last August. I had been swimming in Nantucket Sound, near my home, which I enjoy doing every summer. After swimming underwater for a short distance, only about two or three feet below the surface, I came up and found that one of my ears would not clear. I shook my head to the side and wiggled my finger in the ear, but it remained blocked.

The next day I realized there was a substantial loss of hearing in that ear. I decided to look up the definition of ears in the Christian Science textbook and to study, and pray with, the spiritual sense it gives. It explains that ears are “not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 585). From this I reasoned that hearing has nothing to do with a material structure, but with an understanding of our spiritual identity, and that no material substance could alter or diminish my real identity as God’s spiritual idea, or my God-given understanding of it.

There is a verse in the Bible that my mother first shared with me years ago: “The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them” (Proverbs 20:12). That which God creates is spiritual, not material; and the faculties of Soul, God, which are reflected in its ideas, are always perfect and fully functional; they can never be reduced or limited.
