Palm needle removed through ‘mental surgery’
A few years ago, while I was walking our dog in the park, an object became lodged in my foot. Immediately I felt searing pain. This object, whatever it was, couldn’t be seen from the top or bottom of my foot, and in fact at this stage I didn’t know what had actually happened.
My first thought was: “A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 463). This helped me see that as the spiritual idea of God, my being was impenetrable; that my beautiful expression of mobility, useful activity, freedom, and uprightness could never be punctured by error of any kind. I said, “I love you, foot,” and meant it. These and other uplifting thoughts helped sustain me, turning my thought away from the inflammation and swelling. I was able to walk back home and go about my normal duties.
However, in response to colleagues’ concerns about the situation, I went to an after-hours medical center to have the offending object removed. But the doctor on duty could not see anything at all in my foot, and he was reluctant to probe without an ultrasound, which he was not equipped to provide.
