The mothering power of Life, Truth, and Love
The terrible twos, teenage drama, empty nesters—are these labels the best we can do to define the opportunities we have for growth as parents? The world often paints a bleak or frightening picture of parenthood. But the truths taught in Christian Science and practiced daily take us to a place where we can feel divine Life, Truth, and Love gently leading us—and our children—with patience, gratitude, joy, and blessing.
Over the years many people have assumed that, having four children, I must know a lot about mothering. Yet I’ve often felt as if I was only putting one foot in front of the other—not always sure where I was going or whether I was doing the right thing. But recently I had an opportunity to pray deeply about motherhood. This prayer has blessed me, my family, and friends seeking to feel God’s presence in their mothering.
About a year ago, I realized the need to heal some of the widely accepted challenges of motherhood. Growing pains, childhood phases, battles for control, fear of letting go, and lack of discipline and respect from children were constant subjects of discussion in my own family and those of my friends. One night I reached out to God in prayer. “Father, how do I focus my prayers?” The answer came clearly and calmly, “Restore the right sense of Mother.” And so my sweet study began.
