The Love that draws and holds us

One way I like to look at the Bible is to see it as God’s loving call to all of us to draw closer to God—in other words, to understand Him, to love Him more, and through this growing understanding to find regeneration and healing. Throughout its teachings this call is reiterated in various ways, conveying this timeless invitation: “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17).

Many times I’ve felt this call to draw closer to God, particularly when I’ve struggled with a difficult problem. It’s a call that is continuously reaching out to each of us, even as we’re looking to God in prayer for help. It’s the Christ, the manifestation of God, divine Love, coming to our thought, showing us that Love is already present, already loving us, already embracing us in its omnipotent goodness.

What is it that sometimes leaves us feeling that we’re outside of God’s help? It’s the common, material sense of ourselves as mortals. It’s the conviction that we’re separated from the beginning from God by our very nature and origin. The belief is that God is Spirit, but His creation is matter. God is Love, but man is a selfish, often hateful creature. God is immortal Life, without beginning or end, but His offspring are mortals, having beginning and end.
