The whole picture
Sitting on my bunk one summer as a camp counselor, I heard a little boy ask how to spell pencil. “P-E-N-C-I-L,” I said.
A few minutes later he asked, “How do you spell vania?” He was writing his weekly letter home, and his view of Pennsylvania reminded me of how we often see only half the picture! We think of existence as both material and spiritual, instead of wholly spiritual.
Sometimes we might feel so overwhelmed with whatever difficulty is bothering us that we scarcely remember, when we pray about it, to see the whole picture of spiritual perfection that will make our prayers effective. The whole picture in Christian Science involves a foundational spiritual truth—perfect God and His perfect creation as one inclusive whole, the only reality of being.
