Simultaneous challenges healed
A few years ago I faced a number of personal challenges. I was at the end of my international business career, and my financial situation was disheartening; my debt demands were much greater than my income. My dear wife, who had usually helped me solve problems, had passed on a few years before. My house was in need of many expensive repairs. I could see no solution, and on top of it all, back and knee pain slowed me down.
I recognized that fear was clearly the first thing I had to overcome. And although I felt lost, I knew that through prayer I would find an answer to every problem. For guidance and protection throughout all my personal and business life I had depended on omnipresent God, good. So I naturally turned to God’s love in this apparently hopeless situation and acknowledged God’s abundant supply of good to meet my daily needs.
As I prayed, I learned to stop human outlining and instead listen to divine Mind’s direction, letting the healing solution present itself, whatever it might be. “Listen and let” became my motto—listen to God and yield to His guidance and care. And I found reassurance in Hymn 148 in the Christian Science Hymnal:
In heavenly Love abiding,
No change my heart shall fear;
And safe is such confiding,
For nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me,
My heart may low be laid;
But God is round about me,
And can I be dismayed?
(Anna L. Waring)
Through prayer and complete reliance on God, the solution began to unfold. My dear son and daughters, despite their busy schedules, flew in to help. Together we arranged the needed sale of the house, which happened quickly. Major debts were paid off, and an affordable place to live was found that enabled me to meet all my immediate needs. The back and knee pain completely disappeared. The resulting freedom opened wider horizons for sharing my interests and experience with others. In fact, a new sense of purpose evolved.
The last few lines of Hymn 148 perfectly express how I feel. I can now say with confidence and gratitude:
My path in life is free;
My Father has my treasure,
And He will walk with me.
We can trust that, regardless of the challenges or life changes we face, however discordant they might appear, through prayer and spiritual growth we are able to overcome those challenges and prove that we live in the unchanging safety of divine Love’s care, and “nothing changes” there.
