Understanding spiritual reality more and more
Taking Primary class instruction in Christian Science was a life-changing event for me—no doubt about it. I first inquired about taking this step when I was in my early years of college, but the Christian Science teacher with whom I spoke discerned that I had a bit of growing to do in thought before I could get the most out of the experience.
Although at the time I was terribly disappointed, looking back I am certain that the teacher was absolutely right. In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Spirit, God, gathers unformed thoughts into their proper channels, and unfolds these thoughts, even as He opens the petals of a holy purpose in order that the purpose may appear” (p. 506). My experience proved this.
I continued to cherish the idea of class, and eight years later my dream became a reality. As the spiritual truths and insights unfolded during class, I saw clearly that the period leading up to it had been invaluable in preparing me for this gift. I’d had experiences that had made me truly hungry to understand more about God, my relationship to Him, and how to heal more effectively.
