Learning from a high school healing

When I was in high school, I was a member of the basketball team. One year, right before a regional tournament, I had a pretty severe cold that made it difficult for me to walk from class to class, let alone play basketball.

District rules stipulated that athletes had to attend school the day before and after a game, in order to play. Teachers, friends, teammates, and coaches all expressed great concern about my health and tried offering me herbal and vitamin-based remedies to help me shake the cold. They knew that in the past I’d turned to Christian Science, rather than medicine, for healing, and they felt I might be willing to try these non-drug options.

While the advice was well intentioned, I didn’t feel comfortable relying on any matter-based remedy for healing because prior experience had shown me how effective scientific prayer alone is. I also didn’t feel comfortable explaining to others that I was going to rely on prayer for healing. I went home after basketball practice that night and prayed, with the support of my parents. I also asked my dad, a Christian Science practitioner, for specific Christian Science treatment.
