A family trip and a special psalm
Our neighbors across the street were avid and enthusiastic snow-skiers, and they were eager for our family to learn since our sons were in school together. One holiday weekend, after taking a trip with just the adults, we all planned a ski trip with our children and also another family from school.
We were a jolly band of 12 as we drove in two cars from eastern Kansas to the Colorado mountains. Neither of the other families were Christian Scientists, and there was some talk of accidents and adjusting to the altitude. We had rented a large condo right on the slopes. Each adult couple had a bedroom, but the kids were camped out all over the place.
The first night, my son came into our bedroom, saying he was not feeling well. He described all the symptoms of altitude sickness. I needed a private place, where I could turn on a light to read and pray for our son, and so we retreated to a bathroom. He brought his sleeping bag and pillow and crawled into the bathtub. I sat on the floor and began reading various psalms from the Bible. I’m sure I read the 23rd Psalm and the 91st Psalm, and then I started reading some other psalms.
