Divine Love saved my home

Originally published as a Web Original on April 21, 2014

In September 2010, after losing significant income during the recession, I realized I would no longer be able to make my mortgage payments. I contacted my bank to request a loan modification but soon discovered that since I had made all my payments on time and was not behind, the bank would not consider me for a loan modification.

Next I went to my bank’s local home-ownership preservation office and talked with a representative, who informed me that even after working for the bank for seven years, she herself had had to file for bankruptcy because the bank would not give her a loan modification. She gave me the name of a lawyer she had worked with in her efforts to keep her home, and I left the office feeling disappointed and frustrated.

My son, who is a good financial steward, accompanied me to the lawyer’s office. The lawyer was unavailable, but someone from the office spoke with us at length and assured us that they would indeed be able to help me secure a loan modification. However, after several months of e-mail communication with the lawyer’s office reminding them that I had stopped making mortgage payments on their advice and had not seen any progress toward resolving my issue, I realized that this was not the path I should be on.
