Symptoms of food poisoning overcome

In the summer of 1996, my husband and I took a vacation trip to Alaska, which included a cruise from Anchorage to Vancouver, British Columbia, along the Inside Passage. On the trip, we were treated to beautiful scenery, views of glaciers, and stops in a few colorful towns along the way, topped off with a final celebration banquet.

After that farewell dinner, I awoke in the night feeling violently ill with what appeared to be food poisoning. In following the teachings of Christian Science, I have always relied on God when healing was needed, and I turned at once to Him in prayer. I affirmed His ever-presence, all-power, and love for me, His child. I knew that God is good and decrees only good for His creation. I also prayed with what Mary Baker Eddy says of man on page 475 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, affirming that I am not material, but rather spiritual and perfect as God’s image and likeness.

My husband supported me in prayer and also by reading to me from the weekly
Christian Science Bible Lesson and Science and Health. We pondered statements by Mrs. Eddy about food on pages 220–221 and 388–389 of Science and Health. We found two statements particularly helpful: “Mortal mind forms all conditions of the mortal body, and controls the stomach, bones, lungs, heart, blood, etc., as directly as the volition or will moves the hand” (p. 220) and “The fact is, food does not affect the absolute Life of man, and this becomes self-evident, when we learn that God is our Life” (p. 388). I especially held to the fact that “food does not affect the absolute Life of man.”
