Thank you, God

One day in the late ’70s, I saw an advert announcing that a Christian Science lecturer from New York was coming to town to give a talk on Christianity and healing the following week at the local branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I thought it would be interesting and asked a friend if she would like to come with me. I had never been to that church, but I had heard of Christian Science many years before from neighbors, where I had grown up, although they never told me that it was a healing church, and that Christian Scientists solved their problems through prayer. My friend replied that it was her church, and she went to Sunday School there. So on the said night, we sallied forth and listened intently to the lecture.

The lecturer talked about God, and healing through the love of God. She also spoke about Christ Jesus, His Son, and the Christ, Truth, his divine nature, the spirituality that he taught and demonstrated. At the end of the lecturer’s talk, I remember her saying that her father was a medical doctor and her mother was a student of Christian Science. She continued that she had never had any medication in her life—no pills, no ointment—just prayer, which her mother had given her freely, along with studying the Bible and a book called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

I was very impressed by this. My third child, a boy, was four years old at that time. After his birth I had been admitted to a mental hospital for postnatal depression, for which I was treated with medication for 12 weeks. Upon leaving, I stayed with my parents for a fortnight, after which I was able to take my son home. I continued taking drugs for the condition for four years—until that lecture.
