Overcoming grief
Last year I experienced a quick healing of grief. After nearly 67 years of marriage, my dear husband passed on, and although he didn’t study Christian Science, he had attended church every Sunday with our three children and me. However, he lived Christian Science, and set a wonderful example in bringing up the children. I’m so grateful to God for giving me the strength to care for my husband at home during our last few years together.
On the morning of his memorial service, as I walked into the chapel with my son, I was feeling devastated. The attendant came to us and said that he would take us upstairs to the family room until the service started. I immediately thought, “Up, up to God, to Life, Truth, and Love.” I recalled the following words from the Apostle Paul’s Epistle to the Romans: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (8:35). Then I thought, “Family, family of God, all one, inseparable.”
By the time we had taken the last few stairs, I was free of that deep sorrow. I was able to greet the family with joy. All through the service, I just felt a deep peace, and didn’t shed a tear. My thought stayed with God, and at the reception, I was able to happily greet all our friends.
