Burned finger quickly healed
On Christmas day I was making butter cookies with my mom and sister. As I took the last batch of cookies out of the oven, I heard a sizzling sound but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. Suddenly one of my fingers inside the oven mitt started to really hurt. I dropped the cookies back into the oven and pulled the mitt off. The mitt had gotten wet in one place, which had apparently allowed the heat to pass through to my finger. The picture was not pretty, and as I cleaned up my finger I began to pray.
The first thought that came to me was that nothing could take away my joy, since I was a reflection of God, divine Love and Spirit. While I knew this to be true, it felt rather like a memorized response without any inspiration behind it.
Then I remembered two other things: first, that I had used this same idea years before when I had burned my hand while baking brownies in college. I’d had a quick healing. Second, I recalled that there are no formulas in Christian Science prayer, meaning that we don’t need to pray in formal, predetermined ways. That didn’t mean the inspiration I’d gained in college was no longer valid—but in that moment I felt what I needed was fresh, new inspiration. I needed to know what God was seeing and knowing about me, instead of feeling like I was recycling inspiration from the past.
I reached out in my thought to God and just listened. What came back was the idea that there is just one Life, God, and that I am a reflection of this Life, not a life made up of matter that’s prone to accidents. And because Life is Spirit and, again, I’m a reflection of Life, then I must be spiritual. Spirit cannot be injured and so I cannot be either. There cannot be a history of injury—meaning this burn didn’t have a real origin—since it never happened in the kingdom of God.
With that, the pain went away and my finger returned to its normal, smooth appearance within minutes. And on top of that, the cookies I had dropped in the oven had not burned by the time I got back to them!
