Growth on hand gone

This experience happened several years ago, but I’m still learning from it.

For several years I had a growth that looked like a wart on one of my hands. I worked as a mechanic, carpenter, and gardener, and the growth sometimes would bleed and be painful.

When I felt called to the profession of Christian Science nursing, I took courses to learn the significance of its role in Christian Science healing. I loved learning about the healing work of Christ Jesus and the fact that we could practice this healing method in our time, too. I loved the clarity of Mary Baker Eddy’s explanations of Christian Science in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

From the first days of Christian Science nursing, some of the tasks required me to have my hands in water regularly. Prior to this time, having my hands wet would aggravate the growth and lead to severe discomfort. To be a Christian Science nurse, I realized that I needed to think of those I served as whole, pure, and perfect spiritual children of God, reflections of divine Spirit. In order to see patients correctly, it dawned on me that first I had to understand my own individuality as God’s reflection, and that I am spiritual, not material in any way.

One inspiring thought I held to during my Christian Science nursing work was from Hymn 324 in the Christian Science Hymnal. The last few lines of the first verse read, or rather sing, “Take my hands, and let them move / At the impulse of Thy love” (Frances R. Havergal, adapted). I lived with this prayer in thought as I worked.

One day, only a week or so after I began working as a Christian Science nurse, I realized that the growth on my hand had not bothered me for a while. When I looked, it was gone. There was no trace of any growth, and it has not returned.

I am convinced that the realization of my spiritual individuality as the image of the perfect, flawless Father-Mother God, who is Spirit, replaced a flawed material concept of myself. The result was a recognition of my wholeness, and a permanent healing.
