Prayer for animals

[“Prayerfully confronting animal abuse,” Leslie Dill Gondolf, March 4, 2013, issue]

As a fellow animal lover, I sometimes find myself in absolute despair about the conditions domestic and farm animals are subjected to. Your article is a timely reminder not to “stand aghast” but rather take the time to prayerfully reverse these claims and know that prayer is effective.

Not as inviting

There is something about the new Sentinel format that is not quite as inviting as before. I hadn’t been able put my finger on it until the letter by Michelle McRae in the February 25 issue helped me to pinpoint what is missing.

I, too, miss the introduction by the editor, which was always such a warm welcome to each issue, leading one into the following pages with anticipation. I also appreciated photos of those writing the articles or of a landscape that gave a sense of peace. Not that every article needs a photo, but one here and there sort of beckons you on through to the end of the issue.

It was refreshing to see faces of “ordinary” people. Especially when in other media all you see are glamorized models or sensationalized photos. To see ordinary folk gave the articles a friendly approachability. And when photos were of Christian Scientists from other lands or other generations, it gave me an appreciation of the universality of the movement. If the photo was of an individual I thought I might not have anything in common with, it was very instructive to find commonality and inspiration in their writing—a good lesson each time not to judge by appearances.

One new feature that I do appreciate is the selection of quotes on the inside cover from online articles. I am now learning to check JSH-Online.com for more inspiration. I realize it might take some changes to make the print issues affordable. So I’m on board with whatever it takes to keep the inspiring Sentinel articles arriving in my mailbox!

Thinking about security

Though I always feel secure—even living alone—I have felt the importance of thinking more deeply about it spiritually. So when I saw Walter Rodgers’s Sentinel article [“Security: Where does it come from?” February 25], it woke me to set aside time to “hunker down and dive in.” Thank you, thank you, Mr. Rodgers. It is so clear and concise, practical, and supported with fine ideas from many sources. For me, this is a “keeper” to return to from time to time as I find not only a deeper security for myself, but also reach out to my neighbors and to our world. Also, I am looking forward to more “visits” with the riches that I can see lie ahead in this Sentinel
