Cold and flu symptoms gone

Some years ago, while working for a computer firm, I was afflicted with severe flu symptoms. Although I prayed and did some spiritual study over a couple of days, the healing wasn’t forthcoming, so I called on a Christian Science practitioner for support. The practitioner readily agreed to help me and very lovingly shared some truths for me to ponder.

Later that evening, I wanted to go to the store. In particular, I wanted some orange juice simply because I liked it and it sounded refreshing. However, it didn’t feel wise to go out. I decided instead to take time to just sit quietly and fill my thought with gratitude for all that I had and the good that I knew was going on right then.

As I began to feel filled with a sense of God’s love for me, the love naturally overflowed to include my fellow man and co-workers. Suddenly someone rang the intercom downstairs. Upon answering, I discovered it was a friend and co-worker who lived about 30 minutes west of me, but was seldom in my area. She’d stopped by to see me.

I was happy to hear from her, but I did feel it best to inform her that I had the flu. After speaking a few minutes, she offered to go to the store for me, even though I had not mentioned it to her. I said some orange juice would be nice. When she returned, I was so surprised to see all that she’d brought me—orange juice, a bag of oranges, a nice family magazine, and some lovely tulips, for which I expressed much gratitude and joy.

I felt filled with a sense of awe at God’s loving and immediate provision, which I knew included my friend.

Over the next hour, I settled down to read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. At one point, I distinctly recalled something the practitioner stated. She said, “Remember, you are not the battlefield upon which Truth and error are fighting it out.” This beautiful sense of truth and love so illumined my thought that I knew without a doubt that the healing was complete even though the physical symptoms remained.

I simply and joyfully let this conviction govern my thought for the remainder of the evening, and when I awoke the next morning, I was completely free of all symptoms. My heart sang with gratitude!

Another quick healing happened when I moved back to my home state and was working through a temporary agency. Again, it was winter and I started suffering from severe cold symptoms. One night, before going to sleep, I lifted my thought to feel the presence of the Christ and opened the Christian Science Hymnal. The hymn before me started, “In speechless prayer and reverence, / Dear Lord, I come to Thee” (Ellen J. Glover, No. 151 ). When I came to the line “Thy presence healeth me,” I was suddenly filled with such humility to realize that simply being in God’s, divine Love’s, presence was enough to heal me. I didn’t have to do anything special.

I went to sleep feeling very loved and with a wonderful sense of comfort. The next morning I awoke completely well.

I rejoice with the Psalmist in remembering God’s love and blessings. “I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving” (Psalm 69:30 ).
