When I first 'met' my teacher

Students of Christian Science who are thinking about taking Primary class instruction often ask, “How do you find your teacher?” The answer is that God directs in many ways.

I found my teacher when I was at Principia College. A practitioner had lent me articles from The Christian Science Journal, and one was especially clear and helpful. I wanted to find it again, but didn’t know the volume number. The college librarian directed me to racks of Journal issues temporarily stored in the basement (no JSH-Online.com back then!). My search finally turned up a different article by the same author. Now, I’m not comfortable with overly dramatic expressions—even when they’re from the Bible—but as I read, I knew what the two disciples of Jesus meant when they said, “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:32).

Right then I was certain. Here was my Christian Science teacher! “I should find out how to contact this teacher now,” I thought, “because in ten years or so, when I’m ready, I want to have class instruction.” But it was amazing how soon everything began to fall into place. I was accepted for class that very summer. Funds were provided, and when I turned down a job that conflicted with the class, immediately an even better opportunity came.
