Understanding the law of God

For the lesson titled "Christian Science" from June 18-24, 2012

June quarterly cover
This week’s Bible Lesson titled “Christian Science” focuses on the law of God. The Golden Text declares: “The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable” (Isaiah 42:21, New King James Version). This verse reassures us that God makes His laws plain to us, enabling us to follow and obey them. God endows His laws with majesty, glory, and honor.

Mary Baker Eddy’s personal experience speaks to the truth of that prophecy. Her dramatic healing in 1866 from a life-threatening injury, through prayer alone, led her to a more spiritual understanding of the very nature of God as the divine Principle governing all of His creation in perfect harmony. She wrote: “God had been graciously preparing me during many years for the reception of this final revelation of the absolute divine Principle of scientific mental healing.

“This apodictical Principle points to the revelation of Immanuel, ‘God with us,’—the sovereign ever-presence, delivering the children of men from every ill ‘that flesh is heir to’ ” (Science and Health, p. 107, citation 1). Jesus’ healing of the nobleman’s son in Section III and Paul’s raising of Eutychus from death in Section IV, are examples of this kind of healing, as is the account of Elijah’s raising of the widow’s son from death in Section II.
