Thank you, Dad

A Father’s Day tribute

How grateful I continue to be for my dad and his commitment to the way of life that resulted from his study of Christian Science. Although my dad has passed on, I love thinking about him—what he shared so naturally and effectively, the way he lived, and the example he set. Let me tell you about him.

As a young married man in his mid-20s, he found himself experiencing more and more discomfort from what was diagnosed as ulcers—so much so that he was barely able to eat anything. My mother was not a Christian Scientist at the time, but had a relative who was, so she suggested that he try Christian Science. Thinking it wouldn’t hurt, Dad picked up the phone book and found a Christian Science practitioner’s listing in the yellow pages. He made an appointment for the following day.

At the appointment, Dad listened politely. The practitioner’s words were completely foreign to him, but he perked up when he was told that he could go home and eat whatever he liked. Thinking that at least he’d have a good meal, Dad went home and decided to have a steak dinner with everything he loved. He never experienced any painful effects. To his great surprise, that was the end of the issue. The next day he went back to see the practitioner, and said to this man, “I want to know how you did that!”
