Growth healed
Over two years ago, I noticed a growth on top of my head. I did some rather casual prayerful work, knowing that God is the only cause and that all real growth is spiritual. I thought the growth would dissipate by itself, as other smaller ones had in the past. Yet this growth increased in size and hardened, taking on an ugly appearance as months went by. Soon it became difficult to conceal when I combed my hair, and I frequently wore a baseball cap to cover the area.
I realized that I needed to pray more fervently about the situation, and over the following year I sought the support of Christian Science practitioners at different times. The spiritual growth I felt during this period was huge and most gratifying as I understood more of my true, entirely spiritual nature as a child of God made in His image and likeness (see Genesis 1:26, 27). Yet there was no change in the appearance of the growth.
A breakthrough came during correspondence with a practitioner. In discussing the illusionary nature of evil, she mentioned that if something didn’t seem to be real, it wouldn’t be an illusion! That was the very definition of an illusion. That idea really got my attention, and I saw even more clearly that the growth was only a phenomenon of material sense and no part of my real being.
About the same time, a friend had a healing account of his published in a newspaper article on Christian Science. It was about a similar growth on his neck. I found my friend’s article very helpful as I continued to persist in breaking the fear surrounding the appearance of the growth and seeing its unreality. During this same time period, I was encouraged when a large mole that had been on my back painlessly fell off.
One of the turning points, to the healing of the growth on my head, was when I read an audio chat transcript titled “Healing Incurable Disease—with Christian Science” (Marian English, March 2, 2010, JSH-Online.com). In this chat, a Christian Science practitioner and teacher answered questions and dialogued with guests who wrote in. I gleaned many insights into healing from this, including an affirmation that prayer in Christian Science does not try to make matter better; it makes apparent the good God has already done.
Another point that hit home from the chat was the practitioner’s response to a caller who commented that she had made wonderful progress in learning about her spiritual being while praying with a practitioner about a problem considered medically incurable, but, the caller said, her symptoms had not changed.
The practitioner on the chat responded by reflecting on a slow healing she’d had herself, stating that it wasn’t until she learned to bring every thought to the obedience of Christ—not every other one—that needed insight came (see II Corinthians 10:5). The practitioner said that when she thought correctly about herself, at all times, and trusted God, the healing was realized.
Very shortly after reading the transcript of this chat, and gaining new insight and inspiration, the growth on my head began to drain and continued to do so over a two-week period, leaving only a small mark on my scalp. I should also mention that a couple of months after the healing, a wart came off my forearm, too.
I am most grateful for this demonstration of spiritual healing. It has given me renewed confidence in giving Christian Science treatment to myself and also helping others through prayer.
