Face to face with Love

Five-year-old Makenzie sits between the boys
round blue eyes questioning
her first time in a Sunday School

I love her open countenance
carrot-colored hair swept into
a sideways ponytail, tied with a bow

We talk about Father-Mother, Spirit, Love
Love as everywhere and always
no matter which parent’s house you’re at

Makenzie beams; her big eyes widen
Timmy bends towards her with urgent words
“And we’re God’s reflection!”

“Love is reflected in love,” * here
for in the middle of my next sentence
Makenzie bursts out, “I love God!”

After class she comes and hugs me—twice
and again in the foyer, then outside
her blue eyes full of wonder, full of light

William, too, hugs every last one at church
and I leave basking in love, unable to tell
the difference between giving and receiving it.
