Dancing and praising God

During the summer following my freshman year in high school, I attended a dance program for young dancers aspiring to become teachers. I traveled quite far from home to participate in the program. I was so excited to dance all day, every day, for a whole week. However, early in the week I fell during a class and injured my ankle. I couldn’t walk without the aid of crutches. I was very disappointed. The staff required that I have a medical exam. Although medical treatment was recommended, I chose to rely on metaphysical treatment. I called my parents and a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help.

The practitioner asked me to read some of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy before I got out of bed each morning. I woke up early before classes began and studied in my room. I gained a better understanding that God is the only creator and that He created me in His image, after His likeness. I learned more clearly that I am spiritual because God, Spirit, created me. Since I am spiritual, I couldn’t be subject to any physical condition. As I saw the truth of my identity more clearly, healing took place very quickly, and I was dancing before the end of the week.

A few years later, I enrolled as a full-time dance student at a performing arts university located in a city far from home. I didn’t know anyone at my new school, and living in the center of the city was a whole new experience for me. I had grown up on a family farm in the country and was very close to my parents and siblings. Even though I had prayed and felt this was the right step, I felt very lonely and scared. Thankfully, there was a Church of Christ, Scientist, within walking distance of the college, and I began to attend Sunday School and Wednesday evening testimony meetings.
