In this occasional series, individuals share how taking Christian Science Primary class instruction has strengthened their spiritual understanding, and brought increasing inspiration and healing to their lives.

Prayer provides the means

In the late 1990s, class instruction in Christian Science looked impossible for me. For some years, I’d had a great desire to take class for my spiritual growth, as I wanted to be a Christian Science healer. But during that time I was jobless, and I asked myself where I could find money for this dream to come true. It seemed difficult to answer.

A friend of mine, a student of Christian Science with whom I used to share my concerns, explained to me that God is very good and has everything good in store for us, His beloved children. My friend said further that we are absolutely not intended to want, or to lack anything we need. God is Love, and He never leaves His children in a helpless situation. Our infinite resources are established in consciousness, and they are found through prayer—the prayer that is not a request that God provide something currently lacking, but a recognition that each one of us, as His idea, is under the care of a loving Father-Mother God. As we understand that He provides for all, we can see resources as unlimited. My friend encouraged me to trust God.

God's law is one of increasing return on investment.

This conversation gave me a lot of confidence. I felt sure I would be able to take class instruction even though I could not tell how that would come about. A few days later, an idea came to me that I could carry out some commercial activity. However, I did not have the funds to do so. During the three months following the conversation with my friend, I devoted all my time to prayer. The basis of my prayer was the Lord’s Prayer with its spiritual interpretation, as found in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. This helped me feel that God is our Father and Mother, and the source of all substance.

Not long after, I received a call from the manager of the last company I had worked for. My severance pay had not been paid me when I was dismissed, and I had not wanted to enter into litigation with the company. Now the employer was calling to say that I could go and collect my severance pay.

With the money received, I started to do some business. I bought some goods such as sugar, milk, homemade bread, and a number of other small items, and sold them at retail in front of my house. I knew this activity was a spiritual idea, and it prospered as Mrs. Eddy describes in Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896: “God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies. Never ask for tomorrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment” (p. 307). The income I received allowed me to cover the expenses related to my class instruction in Christian Science, which I took in August 1999. I now know God’s law is one of increasing return on investment. The more we perceive of Truth, the more we have; sowing and reaping are equal.
