Hearing restored

Decades ago, I noticed quite a loss of hearing in my left ear. I was not a student of Christian Science at that time; in fact, I knew nothing about it. When I started working for the government later, I had to take a physical, in which they checked my hearing. The job I had applied for was not given to me, because of my hearing issue. But I was given another position, which in time I realized was a right fit for me.

Years later, my wife became interested in Christian Science. One day she said, “Why don’t we get that hearing fixed once and for all?” I didn’t think it was possible that my hearing could be restored through Christian Science, so I didn’t think much about it. As time progressed, my wife became a member of The Mother Church, and I started to go to Wednesday evening testimony meetings with her at a local Christian Science branch church. Later my attendance extended to the Sunday morning services. My wife’s interest in Christian Science finally took hold of me, too, and we both experienced many healings.

Eventually, my wife and I began praying together about the situation with my hearing. We knew that Jesus healed people instantly through knowing them as God knew them. Jesus saw them as perfect, and the Bible assures us “We have the mind of Christ” (I Cor. 2:16). And Jesus promised, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do” (John 14:12). I felt that following in Jesus’ footsteps meant seeing myself as spiritually pure.

My wife’s support helped me be patient in my spiritual growth, and I resolved never to quit working toward a complete healing. During this time, my wife became a full-time Christian Science practitioner and served many people in this capacity for over 35 years.

As I continued to pray about this issue with her and on my own, I would often think of the question “What cannot God do?” (Science and Health, p. 135). I knew that no material power could stand in the way of a complete healing, since God, good, was all-powerful. I prayed to know that I was spiritually whole and complete, and that God takes us “all the way” in an understanding of our true nature.

Early last year, one day in the wee hours of the morning while I was still sleeping, I experienced quite a popping noise in my left ear. It awakened me immediately, but it didn’t give me any pain, so I went back to sleep. I later had liquid run out of that ear while I was sleeping. When the discharge stopped, I went back to sleep again.

The next morning when I got up, I rubbed my left ear and noticed that there was a noise in my apartment that I had not heard before. It was the sound of the furnace fan blowing. While listening to the fan, I heard a robin singing and some sparrows chirping outside my apartment. I had never heard them before.  I was experiencing perfect hearing for the first time in over 30 years.

I had visited an audiologist about a month before that, to purchase a pair of hearing aids as a temporary measure while I worked toward a complete healing. Now that the healing had taken place, I returned to him and told him how my hearing had improved (although I did not mention Christian Science at that time). He was amazed and said that improved hearing was not possible at my age. I cherished my healing by building a mental “wall” of defense against negativity and doubt about what I had experienced, and affirming the truth of what had happened. Later, I was happy to be able to share news of this healing at a Wednesday evening church service.

Since this healing, I wore my hearing aids only for a short period, for the sake of comparison. I was amazed at how complete this healing was, as my hearing was perfectly clear. I found I could converse with no difficulty without the aids. They sit in a box on my shelf now, unused.

I am very grateful to be studying and praying in Christian Science.
