A SUNNY SPOT ON A WINTER DAY

I FIRST DISCOVERED The Christian Science Monitor when my son was about three years old. At that time, I was a single mother raising him with no financial or moral support at hand. The Monitor used to mail out trial subscriptions for a small fee and a limited number of issues. Many times I would have only pennies to spare, so I would send for the trial offer and let it run out, then wait for a new offer in the mail. It wasn't until my son was in high school that I was able to purchase the Monitor on a regular basis.

As my son was entering his teen years. he was very withdrawn and was going through a "breaking away from Mom" phase. I felt like I needed fresh spiritual inspiration—I was searching for a church that might show me a new way to think about our lives. One Sunday morning in mid-February, I awoke to a massive snowstorm. I could not even leave the driveway; roads had not been plowed.

I was very upset, as I had planned to attend a church in a nearby town. I worked hard all week, and church was the thing I looked forward to the most. I loved to sing hymns and praise God for His goodness. But that day, my anger about the winter weather was really taking my joy away.
