Our occasional series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science healing.

TIME AND SPACE TO PRAY

A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO, I attended a "Healing Goals Meeting" sponsored by The Mother Church. One idea from the meeting that really spoke to me was a quote from the Bible that "the harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few" (Luke 10:2). I went home inspired to be a "laborer." Nothing seemed more important to me than to serve God by devoting myself to a deeper understanding of Christian Science and of God's healing power.

At the time I had two very young children, and my everyday life was filled to the brim with all the necessary demands of child-raising. I was so busy that I had no time for myself—certainly not for deeply studying the Bible and Science and Health, which I longed to do. One day I found that bumps had broken out all over my body. I called a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. I immediately knew that this skin condition was the result of inner frustration coming to the surface, and I asked God to show me what to do.

The idea came to put aside a small space in an area of our home where I could take some time out to study every morning. I would take the phone off the hook during this time. Miraculously my children started to play harmoniously together in their own room during that time. The skin condition healed. Then people began to tell me they had tried to reach me for prayerful help, so I stopped taking the phone off the hook.
