IN THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE BIBLE LESSON

SACRAMENTS THAT TAKE PLACE IN THE HEART

MICAH ASKS a very pointed question in the Responsive Reading of this week's Christian Science Bible Lesson, titled "Sacrament." He says, "What doth the Lord require of thee?" And he provides the answer: Be just, merciful, and walk humbly with God (see Micah 6:6, 8).

This Lesson brings out the idea that partaking in God's presence is the true sacramental act, and that such sacraments take place in the heart.

This points to the higher sense of baptism John the Baptist referred to in Mark 1:4, 7, 8 (see citation 1). Even though he was baptizing with water, John predicted that one greater than he was coming, who would baptize spiritually—with the Holy Ghost. Or, as Science and Health explains, the Messiah would baptize with divine Science (see pp. 561–562, cit. 1). This baptism of Spirit "... signifies that the pure in heart see God and are approaching spiritual Life and its demonstration" (p. 241, cit. 3). It is evidence of something already taking place—the pure in heart see God present in their lives.
