THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

SPRING THOUGHTS FROM IRELAND

This scene caught my eye as I approached Ross Castle on the edge of Lough Leane in Killarney, Country Kerry, one morning in May. There were signs of new growth everywhere, though many of the trees were yet to leaf out fully. The breath of spring was in the air.

What really struck me were the reflections in the water, especially the delicacy of lacy branches gently ruffled by the lightest of breezes. Then my eye was drawn to the boats, freshly painted in bright colors, anticipating summer adventures and the carefree times to be enjoyed by holiday-makers. You could almost hear the swish of oars and the laughter in their voices.

But it was those reflections to which my mind returned. "Where would we be without reflection?" I thought. In considering one's relationship with God, a grasp of reflection is important. There's nothing in the reflection (you and I) that's not in the original (God). And what encouragement lies in this observation from Mary Baker Eddy, "Man is God's image and likeness; whatever is possible to God, is possible to man as God's reflection" (Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, p. 183).
