LATELY, IN THINKING ABOUT THE ECONOMY, I've recalled the story of the man whom Jesus met at the pool of Bethesda with its five porches (see John 5:2-9). Along with many others, this man lay waiting for the water to be "troubled," at which point it was believed that the first to step in would be healed of whatever ailment he or she had.

As if to call into question the man's trust in this method, Jesus came up to him and asked, "Wilt thou be made whole?" On hearing the man's explanation, Jesus then told him to stand up and claim his freedom. The man did so and was healed, despite the fact that there was no troubling of the water. Jesus presented the true way of freedom to the man.

Like this man, today many may be figuratively sitting on the five porches, depending on the five material senses, waithing for some outside force to stimulate the waters of the economy before they jump back into the market with hopes that the value of their bank accounts, 401ks, and other accounts will be restored or increased.
