THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

'ALL THINGS ARE BECOME NEW'

CROCUSES are always the first sign for me that has spring has officially arrived. I love spotting their vivid, varied colors dotting landscapes as they renew themselves year after year. They bring to mind the Apostle Paul's observation that when we express Christliness in our lives, we become new creatures—"old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (II Cor. 5:17).

Last winter I was out walking one morning when I passed a cluster of crocuses pushing up through the dirt in a nearby front yard. Seeing them reminded me of a photograph I'd taken of crocuses in my grandmother's garden many years ago. That image was one of my first really "good" photos, and was enthusiastically received by my family and friends. The memory brought a smile to my face, and I thought, "I need to come back sometime and photograph these."

Later that evening I was driving by that same front yard and saw the crocuses again. I was thrilled to note that they were just as beautiful at night, and suddenly felt I wanted to share their vivid and heartening message in a photograph.
