PRAYER BROUGHT QUICK RESULTS

One morning recently, not feeling at all well, I decided I wouldn't cook that day—my kitchen was closed! This was unusual for me since I take care of one of my grandchildren as well as my husband. But my back had begun to hurt, and by nightfall it felt stiff and debilitating.

Wondering how this had happened, I looked for a physical cause. Then I remembered that the day before, rather than waiting for someone to help me, I had carried a chest of drawers all by myself to another room. So I decided right then that I just wouldn't lift anything. Self-pity seemed to take over.

But then I considered what I'd previously learned and experienced as a student of Christian Science. I didn't want to establish in my thinking that this pain and stiffness, even the self-pity, were true about me. I knew it was time to stop thinking about what my body appeared to be telling me, and turn to the truth that as God's expression I was truly and only spiritual—not a physical being who happened to be spiritual, too (see Gen. 1:26). Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). To me this freedom, gained from knowing the truth about myself as God's expression, brings deliverance from any kind of distress.
