HEADACHES AND SHOULDER PAIN GONE
Originally published in Le Héraut de la Science Chrétienne
Since May 2007, when I began reading Le Héraut de la Science Chrétienne [French edition of The Herald of Christian Science], I've gained the conviction that God is All-in-all and that, as Science and Health states: "'God is Love.' More than this we cannot ask, higher we cannot look, farther we cannot go" (p. 6).
In December 2006, I consulted our family doctor because of terrible headaches that tormented me nonstop. After an examination, the doctor diagnosed me as suffering from hypertension. He told me I would have to follow an intensive and regular course of treatment and informed me of all the potential consequences of my condition.
In July 2007, after swallowing the last pill in my medicine box, I would normally have gone back to the doctor, as I had done until then, to have my blood pressure checked and renew my prescription. (This was what I was told to do for the rest of my life.)
But in reading that week's Bible Lesson on Truth in the Christian Science Quarterly, I was struck by this passage from Science and Health: "The question, What is Truth, is answered by demonstration,—by healing both disease and sin; and this demonstration shows that Christian healing confers the most health and makes the best men" (p. viii).
Leaning on this Truth, I then confidently decided not to take that medication anymore. "For your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him," as Jesus told us (Matt. 6:8). I categorically resolved to stop thinking of myself as hypertensive and to let my thought focus on Christian healing, which reveals my spiritual and perfect nature as the reflection of God.
Since then, I've been free of all medication and have not felt any apprehension or need return to the doctor. The headaches never came back, and I feel completely calm. One year later (July 2008) I submitted to a medical examination for employment reasons, and the doctor at work let me know that my blood pressure was normal, which is a good proof for me of the efficacy of Christian healing.
Last spring, it became very painful to do physical work on my job because of pain in my left shoulder. In 2002, a doctor had diagnosed torn ligaments in this shoulder joint. He had prescribed a monthly injection. After some injections, I stopped this treatment, and from time to time I felt some pulling sensation in this shoulder. But now the pain had become severe. I couldn't lift my left arm above my shoulder without distress, and at night I simply could not sleep if I placed any weight on that shoulder.
During this entire period I prayed intensely, especially digging deep into my study of the Christian Science Bible Lesson, striving to see, instead of the sick physical man that I seemed to be, the perfect spiritual man created by God. I had decided in particular to pray four times a day, and I drank in the truths contained in Science and Health.
And then, after about a month, I realized that I had completely forgotten the pain and that it had vanished. I was filled with gratitude to the Lord, the all-powerful God, who had healed me. I also thank the Discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, for this book that explains Christian healing.
I'm very aware that I don't yet understand all of Christian Science, but I continue to study it with fervor. I'm particularly grateful to all the writers of the testimonies published in the Héraut, who explain so well how they have been able to overcome all sorts of difficulties.
