Spirit's season

Under the snow,
cradled in dark, rich
soil, a seed sleeps.

What will we reap
when we ask
the newness within us
to wake up?

We can wait for spring,
burrow into baggy sweaters,
tromp about, making
angels in the snow.

That's the comfortable routine I know.

But what happens if
we sing? if
we startle ourselves
into new birth
now?

We're brave enough
to live spring in the winter—
a strong, all-seasons voice
will show us how.
