ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER

TO LIFT UP THE BROKEN HEART

MY JOURNEY to becoming a Christian Science nurse began more than 20 years ago. A friend suggested to my husband and me that a Christian Science nurse come to our home to help care for a family member who was ill. (A Christian Science practitioner continued to give prayer-based treatment during this time). I'd read about the role of a Christian Science nurse in the Church Manual (see p. 49), but had never really stopped to think much about who they were or what they actually did.

On the day the nurse was supposed to arrive, I watched for her to drive up and was all ready to greet her. But she was the one who greeted me. She wrapped me up in the biggest hug, and I could feel a kind of spiritual conviction and strength. Those cultivated spiritual qualities helped light my path during that challenging time, just as a lighthouse lights the path of safety for the ships so they don't crash onto jagged rocks. For me, the "rocks" I was trying to steer clear of were fear and discouragement.

I saw how focused this Christian Science nurse was as she cared for my family member and shared practical ideas with me about nourishment and comfort. She had a definiteness of purpose that I'd never seen before. It was clear that, as she did her work, she was praying, listening for what she needed to do next.
