PAIN HEALED BY GIVING UP A FALSE VIEW

Several years ago, when our three children were small, our family moved into a second-story apartment building that had no elevator. At the time we had a large stroller that accommodated all the children. The drawback of the stroller was that it was unwieldy to carry down the outdoor steps, something I often did twice a day.

After about two weeks in this new apartment, one of my hips became sore. Walking was uncomfortable, particularly first thing in the morning. I attributed the pain to lugging this clunky stroller up and down the stairs, and complained to my husband. He quietly remarked that I should not attach a physical cause to the pain.

I have to admit, my first reaction was to be annoyed with my husband. The pain had started shortly after I began carrying the stroller on those stairs. Wasn't it obvious that that was the cause? On the other hand, I knew his response involved a prayerful approach. And I asked myself if I wanted to think of myself as vulnerable to material causes. I preferred the freedom that I knew came from identifying myself and all mankind with God—a freedom I'd proved many times by praying as Christian Science had taught me to do.
