ITEMS OF INTEREST

[MEDIA] INTEREST in religion is booming.

"Magazine publishers see that, whenever they put a religious topic on the cover, newsstand sales go through the roof," notes Steven Waldman, Beliefnet co-founder and editor-in-chief, adding the interest includes a variety of faiths.... Debra Mason, executive director of the Religion Newswriters Association, as well as a professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, says more religion beat writers are being brought on to add a second-day perspective to stories. . . . She also says outlets now realize that although the ad dollars to support dedicated religious sections may be declining, the public's interest in all things spiritual is not.

"Every editor in the country knows that the religion writer gets more mail than anybody else, hands down," she adds.
