THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

BEST FRIENDS

This photo, taken years ago when my children were young, is one of my favorites. One evening we went out to dinner at a restaurant deep in the country. After the meal, we walked outside to admire the brilliant afterglow of the sunset. Nearby was a small pond reflecting the sky.

Immediately, I saw the potential for a photograph capturing the silhouetted mountains, but it needed a focus point. So I asked my eldest son if he would go stand quietly on the dock. A friendly dog belonging to the restaurant owners followed him. My son and that dog instinctively clicked. I could see the visual evidence of loyalty and friendship that an animal and a child so naturally share.

At that time, we didn't have a dog. But shortly after, one came unexpectedly into our lives. He was a neighborhood puppy who'd been chained up and left outside day and night. He never stopped whining and barking. One day our younger son came flying through the front door to tell us the owners couldn't stand the puppy anymore. They'd said they had to get rid of him, and he could have him if he wanted. He wanted! And soon Willy leapt into our home and our hearts.
