FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AND SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

In December of 2006, I was leaving a store when I caught the tip of my shoe in a crack in the sidewalk and fell, landing on my right knee. I quickly got up, went to my car, and spent several minutes sitting behind the wheel, praying with spiritual insights that came to me from my study of Christian Science and my familiarity with Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Some thoughts I had were, "There are no accidents," and, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (see pp.424, 468). I finished these prayers with a thank you to God. Looking back, I would now describe my prayers in that moment as "one-liners"—a bit automatic and rote.

I then drove to another store to pick up a couple of items. All of a sudden, as I made my way down an aisle, I felt my knee stiffen and swell, and I was unable to walk without the support of a shopping cart. My knee felt as if it was broken, smashed, or twisted in some way. I also was in a great deal of pain and felt as though I would lose consciousness. With my cellphone, I called a practitioner for help through prayer, and was able to make it home. The trip seemed like the longest drive in the world, and I was praying all the time, affirming that I expressed alertness, as God's reflection. As I plopped onto my bed, my husband helped me contact the practitioner again. By this point, a huge knot or bump had developed on my knee, and my leg was black and blue all the way to my foot. During my talk with the practitioner, the fear that I'd broken something was completely eliminated. I then decided I would radically rely on Christian Science to heal this situation.

The practitioner mentioned that since I demonstrated courage each time I sailed (a much-loved hobby), I could face this challenge with equal courage, since it was a quality that came directly from God. We also talked about the fact that God recognized me only as He had created me—perfect, not broken. And we discussed "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health, which emphasizes spiritual perfection (see p. 468). After resting for a few hours, I woke up ready to work on a project for church. Soon, I felt my knee slip back into position. I was grateful for this adjustment, and with the support of an old pair of crutches, I was able to move to the computer and joyfully complete the task at hand.
