THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

CATCHING CLEAR GLIMPSES OF GOD

I was hurrying to an evening assignment for the newspaper I work at when I came upon this scene. I stopped rushing and reached for my camera.

Trees in stark silhouette came at me through the mist. I lined up their slim, dark trunks so that they would recede in strong vertical lines. I wanted to draw the viewer into the photograph. I focused on a tree partway back, leaving the tree in the foreground soft. Late afternoon light, penetrating the mist, more clearly defined the soaring, sleek beauty of the trees. I felt wonderfully at peace.

I thought of God's perfect alignment, in which clarity and order are always present. And I was reminded of an idea in Science and Health that helps combat the frenzy of our daily lives: ". . . we can catch clear glimpses of God only as the mists disperse, or as they melt into such thinness that we perceive the divine image in some word or deed which indicates the true idea,—the supremacy and reality of good . . ." (p. 205). |CSS
