'I ASKED GOD TO SHOW ME'

One day during the fifth month of my first pregnancy, I began feeling ill and dizzy. My body was very hot, and I felt that I might be losing consciousness. Suddenly I became fearful of passing on because it felt as if the normal functions of my body were shutting down.

Usually when I'm ill, I pray to God. After years of being healed through Christian Science, I've come to understand that as the Psalmist said, God is "a very present help in trouble" (46:1). So I prayed, and I called out to my husband who also immediately began praying with me. But when the symptoms became unbearable, I phoned the Christian Science practitioner who had been praying with me throughout the pregnancy. He agreed to pray right away, and asked that I keep in touch with him.

Still, I couldn't seem to overcome an aggressive fear, and it occurred to me that I should go to the hospital emergency room. Although very concerned for my welfare and our baby's, my husband appeared calm and said he would support me in whatever I decided to do. We called the midwife, who was also a Christian Scientist, at the same time to alert her of the situation.
