A VOW THAT COULDN'T BREAK

WHEN WE GOT MARRIED , I was 19 and my husband was 24. He'd lived on his own from the time he was 17. I'd never lived on my own, so I followed him like a puppy. That was 1942. We were married almost 30 years before his work led to our first time apart.

He said it would only be for about a year, and that he would be able to come home every other weekend. I wasn't concerned, because even though he was very attractive, I really felt I knew him well enough; that his honesty and integrity were beyond reproach. And he was very outspoken about men who cheated on their wives.

After a while, though, our telephone conversations became short and not very communicative. He explained that it was just because he was working 12 to 14 hours a day, and the job was hard.
